Step 1: Create some distance. Even though after a breakup we can miss ex boyfriends or girlfriends terribly, it’s wise to create a little distance so they can begin to miss YOU! Yes, it might seem a bit counter-intuitive at first, but you will see that once you are less available to your ex, they will begin to miss you like you have missed them. After this step you can have a fresher start to make things better.

Step 2: Be aware of why you are missing your ex. By determining why you miss your ex is the first step to deciding what you should do to make yourself feel better about it. Do you miss them because you really love them? Or do you miss them because you just feel rejected or lonely? Sometimes it’s easy to confuse the two. If you really miss your ex and want to build a better relationship, just be calm and remember it’s going to take a little patience. If you’re just feeling lonely, try to hang with friends or family, or even pets, and enjoy your favorite activities to take your mind off of things. Usually loneliness is a feeling that passes and we can get over it by occupying ourselves with other things.

Step 3: Write them a short note or letter. When we miss ex boyfriends and girlfriends, calling or texting is usually not a good idea. It shows impulsiveness and sometimes insincerity. If you want to let your ex know that you really love them and miss them, write a clear and heartfelt but short letter. You don’t want to bombard your ex, interrogate them, or make them feel uncomfortable with a long, emotional letter. A quick thoughtful letter is a great way to let them know you still care and to leave the door open to getting back together.
